A mini guide to the key wine zones
Brescia and its province are home to an extraordinary wine heritage. Before exploring the city, here’s a concise guide to themain wine areas that define the character of the region.
BOTTICINO DOC
A very small DOC area just outside Brescia, known worldwide for itsmarble after which the wine is also named.
Botticino ismade from Barbera (minimum 30%), Marzemino (minimum 20%), Sangiovese (minimum10%) and Schiava Gentile (minimum 10%). The Botticino DOC was established in 1968. The production area includes the municipalities of Brescia, Botticino and Rezzato. The wine has a ruby red colour with garnet reflections and can age to become a Riserva after two years. Due to the steep slopes where it is grown, yields are significantly lower than the permitted limits.

GARDA CLASSICO / RIVIERA DEL GARDA CLASSICO DOC
This area benefits from a particularly mild microclimate, influenced by the lake and constant breezes. At its heart lies Valtènesi, a region with a long-standing winemaking tradition. Groppello is the most representative grape variety—an oenological rarity cultivated exclusively in Valtènesi.
The denomination includes Chiaretto, Bianco, Groppello, Rosso and Rosso Superiore. Chiaretto is themost distinctive wine, with a delicate “rose petal” pink colour and floral aromas of wild berries.
In 2017, the “Classico” subzone was separated and incorporated into the Riviera del Garda Classico DOC.

LUGANA DOC
One of the first Lombard wines—and among the very first in Italy—to receive DOC status, Lugana is produced in the southern hinterland of Lake Garda, across the provinces of Brescia and Verona.
Its main grape variety is Turbiana (also known as Trebbiano di Lugana).
The production area includes Sirmione, Desenzano del Garda, Lonato del Garda, Pozzolengo (Brescia) and Peschiera del Garda (Verona).
The 2011 regulations introduced Lugana Riserva (aged for at least two years), Lugana Vendemmia Tardiva and Lugana Spumante.
Lugana wines have excellent ageing potential thanks to the high natural acidity of Turbiana.

FRANCIACORTA DOCG
Franciacorta was the first Italian wine produced exclusively using the traditional method (secondary fermentation in bottle) to receive DOCG status in 1995.
It is made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Erbamat—an indigenous grape from the Brescia area.
Different styles vary according to grape composition, ageing time and bottle pressure.
The production area includes 19 municipalities in the province of Brescia, such as Adro, Capriolo, Erbusco, Corte Franca, Iseo, Rodengo-Saiano, Rovato and Brescia.
Production and ageing require a minimum of 25 months from harvest.

VALTÈNESI DOC
In 2017, the unified DOC “Riviera del Garda Classico” was established, enhanced by the Valtènesi designation, bringing together previous denominations.
Valtènesi wines (red and Chiaretto) must contain at least 50% Groppello grapes (Gentile and/or Mocasina).
Valtènesi Chiaretto is produced using a distinctive method where the grape skins remain in contact with the must for a short time—often referred to by producers as “the wine of one night.”
The area enjoys the mild Mediterranean microclimate typical of Lake Garda, which has long shaped local agriculture.

SEBINO IGT (LAKE ISEO AREA)
The name comes from Sebino, the ancient name of Lake Iseo, and includes 19 municipalities in Franciacorta and the southern Lake Iseo area.
The territory stretches across the Brescia hills, bordered by the southern shores of Lake Iseo to the north and the Oglio River to the west.
Viticulture in this area dates back to prehistoric times, as evidenced by grape seeds discovered in Provaglio d’Iseo.
Sebino includes white, red, dessert and young wines made from various grape varieties suitable for cultivation in Lombardy.
It is the IGT designation for still wines produced in the Franciacorta area.
